A Word from the Director

As the incoming director of this fine service organization, I also welcome the opportunity to share with you our story: our history, our mission, and some of our challenges and our successes. Almost my entire professional career has been in service to not-for-profit behavioral health systems at both the state and local levels. As someone new to the Georgia system and to Southern Star Community Services, I see it confronted with the same challenges that confront all such service organizations. Having met the excellent staff, begun to work with a dedicated Board, and seen the community support afforded this organization, I am confident that we will make even greater strides in serving the needs of our local communities.

In the coming months, we will not be resting on our laurels. A critical action plan already underway is directed toward making improvements in information technology, including an electronic medical record and telemedicine capabilities. At the same time, we will also concentrate on a more low-tech goal: providing the best face-to-face services possible to the clients who come through our doors, through improved staff training opportunities. Having worked in several states and national organizations, I hope I can bring a broad perspective to the best trends in the field today.

In keeping with this year.s theme, I will note that new agency leadership presents its own challenges and opportunities. In the months and years to come, I hope to build on the legacy of the great staff, programs, and services at Southern Star Community Services. We know that we are facing greater financial and technology challenges than ever before, but with these challenges will come new initiatives for the organization. It is a truism that change is not easy, but only change leads ultimately to growth. This organization plans to lead the way in community behavioral health and developmental disability services for south Georgia. I hope you will join us on this journey. Thank you in advance for your support as we move forward.
