Warning Signs of Mental Illness

Your mental well-being is a vital part of your overall well-being. Mental illness can be treated. People who have suffered from a mental illness have recovered to lead useful and productive lives.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of emotional distress, behavioral problems or thought disorders which characterize mental illness can lead to early treatment and often recovery.

Warning signs include:

          Difficulty coping with stress

Decreased self-esteem or increased feelings of unworthiness

Excessive use of alcohol, tobacco, or medication

Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, or activity levels

Feels of decreased energy and fatigue

              Feelings of hopelessness and despair

Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering

              Severe anxiety or unreasonable fears

Irritability, mood swings, or crying episodes

Confused thoughts and/or distortions of reality

Suicidal or homicidal thoughts, impulses or disorders

While many of the above signs and symptoms may be experienced by all of us at some point, they should be considered cause for concern if their severity or frequency significantly impact one's overall functioning.

If any of the above problems are of a concern for you, see a qualified mental health professional for an in-depth assessment. To arrange for a confidential evaluation, call 1-800-808-2137, or in the Americus calling area, telephone number 229-931-2504.
