Transitions Family Resource Center

Middle Flint Behavioral HealthCare’s programs for children and adolescents are coordinated and delivered through Transitions Family Resource Center. Transitions operates under the philosophy that all children deserve the opportunity to develop and function at the maximum level of potential based upon developmental stages, age, and their adaptive functioning level. The child and adolescent program provides opportunities for children to develop self-sufficiency, enhanced self-esteem, and the opportunity to learn and transfer social skills to various environments.

Services are provided within the least restrictive environment. Hospitalization or out of area placement for those children experiencing chronic severe emotional disturbance is considered only as a last resort. Services available include:

Prevention Services

As a part of Middle Flint Behavioral HealthCare's Transitions Family Resource Center, the Substance Abuse Prevention Program provides technical assistance and resources to communities, prevention program providers, and local school systems in the eight county service area targeting the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by the general population with primary focus on children and youth. Services provided are centered on the six Center for Substance Abuse Prevention strategies which include:

Information Dissemination: providing information about the nature and extent of drug use, abuse, addiction, and the effects on individuals, families, and children.

Prevention Education: providing recurring prevention lessons, seminars, or workshops that aim to improve critical life and social skills, including decision making, refusal skills, critical analysis, and systematic judgment abilities.

Alternative Activities: providing for the participation of target populations in health, constructive activities that exclude substance abuse.

Problem Identification and Referral: classifying those who have indulged in illegal or age inappropriate use of tobacco or alcohol and those who have indulged in the first use of illicit drugs and assess the behaviors for reversal through education, not treatment.

Community-Based Process: enhancing the ability of the community to more effectively provide prevention and treatment services for drug abuse disorders through organizing, planning, and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of services implementation, interagency collaboration, coalition building and networking.

Environmental Approaches: working with community coalitions, schools, and local law enforcement agencies to establish or change written and unwritten community standards, codes, and attitudes, thereby influencing the incidence and prevalence of the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by the general population.
