Substance Abuse Day Support Programs

Persons severely impaired in their ability to function effectively, or productively in their homes or communities due to chronic substance abuse can be assisted in recovery by Southern Star Community Services' Substance Abuse Day Support programs. New Beginnings, operating at a site located in Americus, and Quest, operating at a site located in Reynolds, serve all eight of the counties in the Southern Star Community Services' service area. Transportation is available through our Coordinated Transportation Services (CTS) to those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Rehabilitation is the overall goal emphasized in all aspects of substance abuse day support programs. This includes socialization and recreational events as well as involvement with other social service agencies. Consumers are encouraged to strive for independent living, as well as to prepare to return to the work force as productive members of society once again.

The Substance Abuse Day Support Program seeks to assist persons with chronic substance and dependent issues to increase functioning so they can be successful and satisfied in a chosen environment with the least amount of ongoing professional or legal intervention. The day support program provides a structured and supportive environment to foster development of basic living skills, socialization skills, leisure skills and prevocational skills. Consumers gain an enhanced knowledge and understanding of substance abuse, relapse prevention, and mental illness, increasing the potential for living independently through successful functioning in the community.

A sensitive proactive approach is taken to address substance abuse and the contributing factors in women. The special needs of pregnant women, women with young children, and substance-abusing women of child bearing age are addressed. Traditional issues of 12-step work, relapse prevention, individual and group work are enhanced by attention to gender specific women's issues. Parenting skills, empowerment, communication skills, job readiness, stress management, and violence prevention are issues that are addressed individually and in gender specific groups.

Consumers involved in the substance abuse day support programs generally:

Have had, or will have, sustained contact with the mental health system.

Have an illness or disability that usually does not respond to short term treatment.

Have an impaired capacity to obtain and maintain regular employment.

Are frequently unable to seek out and enjoy leisure time activities.

Have strained relations with others due to past history of substance abuse.

Lack self-confidence and self-esteem.

Have an extreme vulnerability to stress and difficulty coping with mundane matters.

Frequently lack either the motivation or ability to seek help from or to sustain rapport with workers in human service agencies.

Frequently do not give proper attention to health, hygiene and/or other basic sustenance needs

Empowerment, rehabilitation, job readiness, and independence are goals of day support services. The format is used to provide a structured, supportive environment in which participants benefit from socialization, recreational activities, individual and group counseling, and linking with other social service agencies. Consumers are challenged to become independent and contributing members of society.
